Asian Cup 2019: Chhetri overtakes Messi in international goals as India beats Thailand 4-1

The Indian football team made a remarkable 4-1 win over Thailand in their opener of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The official Twitter handle of the AFC Asian Cup also took note of Chhetri’s achievement and said, “Sunil Chhetri scores his 66th with India to overtake Lionel Messi becoming the active player with the 2nd most international goals.”

Chhetri pulled off a stunner in the opening minutes of the second half, a spirited India came forth to double their lead and finish with a scoreline of 4-1.

Chhetri further scored a second goal minutes after the second half resumed to tilt the game in favour of India. Anirudh Thapa made his presence felt with an excellent goal in the 68th minute, before a clinical finish by substitute Jeje Lalpekhlua in the 80th minute.

India who recorded their first victory against Thailand since the Merdeka Cup of 1986, are currently placed on top of the Group A points table.
