Round two of ED grilling underway for Robert Vadra in money laundering case

Date:

New Delhi: After hours of questioning in the money laundering case on Wednesday, another round of questioning is underway for businessman Robert Vadra by Enforcement Directorate (ED) at their Delhi office.

The agency alleges that he owns a number of properties in the UK, bought illegally through kickbacks received in India when the UPA government was in power.

According to reports, Vadra has claimed that the investigation was part of a political witch-hunt. During his five-hour-long questioning on Thursday, he had denied owning any property in the UK or knowing the people, including absconding arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari, whom the agency is investigating.

Meanwhile, a court has given Robert Vadra immunity from arrest till February 16 but also asked that he join the investigation.

According to reports, Vadra, son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. said that he is being subjected to ‘unwarranted, unjustified and malicious criminal prosecution” for political reasons.

The case involves nine London-based properties allegedly owned by Vadra. Three of these are villas, the rest luxury flats – all purchased between 2005 and 2010.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday, who took charge as Congress general secretary arrived at the Congress headquarters after seeing off husband Robert Vadra at the Enforcement Directorate office, said she stood by her family.

“I stand by my family,” Priyanka Gandhi told reporters.

Meanwhile, politicos reacted to Vadra’s questioning.

“Gone are days where he possessed only one property in London. Now it is eight properties, each costlier than the other… One is worth 1.89 million pounds (about Rs. 17 crores),” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

“It is an attempt to not allow opposition parties to unite hence they are serving ED notices to everyone and anyone. But all opposition parties are united,” West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.
