Fact Check: Syed Salahuddin didn’t contest assembly polls on a Congress ticket

A claim is making rounds on social media according to which terrorist Syed Salahuddin who is the head of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, contested assembly elections from Kashmir on Congress ticket in 1987.

The picture post read: “In 1987 Global Terrorist Syed Salauddin once fought MLA election on Congress’s ticket in Kashmir.”

Several users on Facebook and Twitter shared the claim.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, we came to the conclusion that the above claim is FAKE.

It’s true that Syed Salahudeen contested elections but not on a Congress ticket.

When we dug about Salahudeen’s political career, we found that his full name is Syed Mohammed Yusuf Shah who started his political career in 1987 when he contested J&K assembly election on the ticket of the Muslim United Front.

So it is clear that Salahudeen had no linkages with the Congress party.
