Black Panther creates history; becomes first Marvel movie to win an Oscar

In a historical win by Black Panther, it became the first Marvel Studios film to ever win an Oscar. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film won Academy Awards for ‘Best costume design’ (Ruth E. Carter), ‘Best Production Design’ (Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart) and ‘Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson).

It was a historical win, not only for Marvel Studios, but also Ruth Carter, who became the first African-American woman win an Oscar for best costume design.

Carter said in her acceptance speech, “Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,”. “It’s been my life’s honour to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you for honouring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen”, she added.

Carter was previously also nominated for ‘Amistad’ and ‘Malcom X’, but it was her first time winning the award.

Black Panther was nominated under seven categories including ‘Best Original Song’ (“All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA), ‘Best Sound Mixing’ and ‘Best Picture’.
