Elections 2019: RaGa to contest from Wayanad seat in addition to Amethi

Date:

The Congress on Sunday made a big announcement that party prez Rahul Gandhi will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Kerala’s Wayanad as the second seat apart from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, senior party leader and former Union defence minister AK Antony announced.

Speculations about Rahul Gandhi contesting from a second seat had been doing the rounds for a time. ”Rahul ji has given his consent to contest from two seats, very happy to inform you that he will also contest from Wayanad in Kerala,” Antony said in a press conference.

Explaining the Congress chief’s decision, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, ”Why did Modi ji leave Gujarat and contest from Varanasi? Was he not confident in Gujarat? These are immature and childish comments. She(Smriti Irani) will complete a hat-trick of losses.”

The Wayanad constituency is considered Congress party’s bastion and seen as an easy-to-win seat for the Congress chief. In 2009 and 2014, the seat was won by Congress leader M.I. Shanawaz. But it has been lying vacant since his death in 2018.
