West Bengal: Violence mars polling in Raiganj, Chopra

Violence marred the second phase of elections in West Bengal’s Raiganj Lok Sabha seat on Thursday as BJP’s Raiganj candidate Debasree Chaudhuri alleged that TMC workers tried to capture at the Raiganj Coronation High School.

“TMC workers were trying to capture booth. They were campaigning among Muslims there. This isn’t election campaign,” Debasree alleged.

Meanwhile, police had to resort to lathi-charge and tear-gas to clear the blockade at Chopra which falls under Darjeeling parliamentary constituency.

Whereas in Chopra, security personnel lobbed tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge on locals as they blocked NH-34 in protest after unknown miscreants allegedly prevented them from casting their votes at Digirpar polling booth.

A local said that people were stopped by few miscreants from reaching their respective polling booths and the unscrupulous elements allegedly also snatched their voter I-cards.

Meanwhile in a separate incident, a 22-year-old BJP Yuva Morcha member Sisupal Sahis was found hanging from a tree in Senabana village of Arsha (Purulia) on Thursday.

The polling for the second phase of the 17th Lok Sabha elections began on Thursday morning in 95 parliamentary constituencies across 11 states and one Union Territory.

Polling is underway at three constituencies in West Bengal – Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Raiganj on Thursday. Results for all the 543 Lok Sabha seats will be announced on May 23.
