Tej Bahadur Yadav’s nomination for Varanasi rejected, says will move SC

Date:

Sacked BSF soldier Tej Bahadur Yadav’s nomination for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat has been rejected by the Election Commission on Wednesday after he allegedly failed to meet the deadline for submission of certain documents.

The Samajwadi Party candidate said the nomination has been rejected wrongly and he would ‘go to the Supreme Court’.

“I was asked to produce the evidence at 6:15 pm yesterday. We produced the evidence, still my nomination was rejected,” Tej Bahadur Yadav told reporters.

Meanwhile, DM Varanasi said, “A person who has been dismissed from service from state or central government within last 5 yrs has to obtain a certificate from EC stating he/she hasn’t been dismissed due to disloyalty or corruption. Certificate wasn’t produced before 11am. So, the nomination was rejected.”

The poll watchdog had sent him a notice yesterday, asking him to clarify whether he was dismissed.

In its letter, the poll body said employees of the state or central government who have been dismissed for ‘corruption or disloyalty to the state’ shall be disqualified from campaigning for a period of five years.

While, Rajesh Gupta, lawyer of Tej Bahadur Yadav claimed, “We had submitted the evidence that was asked from us. Still, the nomination was declared invalid. We will go to the Supreme Court.”

Yadav was dismissed from the BSF after he had posted four videos on social media in January 2017, which showed him complaining about unpalatable food at his camp along the Indo-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir.
