Narendra Modi appointed prime minister for a second term

Date:

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed Narendra Modi to the office of the prime minister of India, hours after he was elected the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Parliamentary Party as well as the National Democratic Alliance.

After the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance unanimously elected him as their leader, Modi reached the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday night to stake claim to form the next government.

Modi later told reporters at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhavan that President Kovind has appointed him prime minister-elect and asked him to form the new government.

The outgoing Union council of ministers had tendered its resignation on Friday night and Kovind had asked Modi to continue as caretaker PM.

Recording a massive victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party alone won 303 seats out of the 542 seats in the 2019 General Elections. The Congress secured only 52 seats, which is not enough for it to claim the post of the Leader of Opposition in the new House.
