Muslim man dies after being lynched in Jharkhand; forced to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’

Date:

A 24 year old Muslim man succumbed to death on Saturday, June 22, 2019, after being brutally thrashed by a radical mob for allegedly stealing a motorcycle in Jharkhand on June 17.

According to Kartik S, the Seraikela-Kharsawan district police chief, a special police force in Jharkhand was set up to investigate his death and have arrested five suspects. He further stated that Sub inspector Chandramohan Oraon and assistant sub inspector Bipin Bihari Singh were suspended for not reporting the issue on 18th June to higher authorities and for not registering a case under lynching the same day.

The issue over lynching was also raised in the parliamentary session on Monday where the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad tagged Prime Minister Modi’s idea of ‘New India’, a worse option as compared to ‘Old India’ which had no place for anger and mob killings.

Mehbooba Mufti tweeted recently over the issue;”Tabrez Ansari was lynched to death in BJP ruled Jharkhand. A Hindu mob thrashed him ruthlessly because he refused to chant Jai Sri Ram. Is this NDA 2.0’s New India? Yeh kaunsa tareeka hai sabka vishwas jeetnay ka?…………”

Tabrez Ansari worked as a labourer in Pune and was visiting his family in his village in Jharkhand’s Kharsawan district to celebrate Eid. During the visit, the family arranged for him to get married. On Tuesday, while on his way back from Jamshedpur, barely 5 kms before his house, he and his friends were attacked by a mob, that accused them of theft. His friends managed to escape from the scene, while Tabrez was left alone with the angry mob.

Since then, several videos have circulated over social media, giving a recorded footage of the incident. In the videos, Tabrez is seen denying all allegations of theft, yet, the mob refuses to hear his plea and decides to take law in their own hands. Eventually, they tied him up to a pole and beat him up with lathis. Unfortunately, in the videos, he is also being forced to chant the words; “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman”, that raised a religious controversy.

Tabrez Ansari, for his alleged actions of theft, was only handed over to the police, the day after when when he fell unconscious. The police kept him in custody, there after, only taking him to the hospital after he reported ill. On reaching the hospital, Tabrez was declared dead. His relatives refused to believe the news and took him to a private hospital, where also he was declared dead.

His relatives have accused the police of ignorance and negligence of Tabrez’s deteriorating health, and have shown a desire to file a case against the legal authorities in charge.

Furthermore, this incident took place on the day the Ministry of External Affairs rejected an official report released by the United States that declared mob attacks by “violent extremist Hindu groups” against minority communities, particularly Muslims, has continued to rise in India in 2018.
