Meet the 80-year-old woman who sells idli at Re 1 per piece in Tamil Nadu

Date:

An 80-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district who sells idlis at just one rupee each has melted the hearts of many.

The 80-year-old K Kamalathal video depicting her hardship has gone viral within a day after the chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, tweeted the video.

He tweeted the video of Kamalathal, the woman who sells idlis to the needy, daily for Rs 1, with the caption, “One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I’d be happy to ‘invest’ in her business & buy her an LPG fueled stove.”

After the video went viral, she got an LPG connection.

She sells idlis for just Re 1 per piece along with sambhar and chutney. She has been doing this for 30-35 years now.

The reason behind the pricing of the idlis is that the daily wage workers can start their day on a full stomach and save money for their families.
