This man in the viral picture is NOT a JNU student; here’s the fact check

A picture of an old man is being shared on social media claiming that he is a JNU student participating in the ongoing protest against the hostel fee hike.

“Delhi Police stopped this man from entering JNU, saying, ‘There is a riot going on inside the campus. Parents and guardians cannot visit for some days.’ The man replied, ‘But I’m a JNU student, ” the caption attached to the video read.

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

On putting the image through reverse image search, we found many articles on Yandex that identified his as Kancha Ilaiah.

Kancha Ilaiah is an Indian political theorist, writer, and activist for Dalit rights.

Ilaiah has a Ph.D. in Buddhism. The information on his website states, “Ilaiah has an M.A. degree in political science from Osmania University, Hyderabad and an M.Phil. awarded for his study of land reform in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. He was awarded with Ph.D. degree for his work entitled ‘Political Thought of Gautama Buddha’. ”

He has also served as Director of the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad and is also a recipient of the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Award.

The above information proves that he completed his education from Osmania University, Hyderabad and was not a JNU student. Hence the claim attached to the picture is NOT true.
