Pragya Thakur removed from Parliament’s defence panel after Godse remark

Date:

The Bharatiya Janata Party has condemned its controversial MP Pragya Thakur’s for her remarks on Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, and barred her from attending the regular meeting for party MPs for the rest of the winter session, BJP working president JP Nadda has said, according to news agency ANI.

Pragya Thakur is also being pulled out from the parliamentary panel on defence.

“The statement given by MP Pragya Thakur is condemnable. BJP never supports such statement and we do not support this ideology. We have decided that Thakur will not attend meetings of BJP parliamentary party during the session,” he told reporters.

On Wednesday, during a Lok Sabha discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, DMK member A Raja cited a statement by Godse on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi. Pragya Thakur interrupted him; she said he couldn’t give the example “of a deshbhakt”.

Pragya Thakur has described Nathuram Godse as a “patriot” once before — during this year’s Lok Sabha election campaign.

A day later, Prime Minister Modi had said the remarks made about Gandhiji or Nathuram Godse were very bad and very wrong for society. “She has sought an apology but I would never be able to forgive her fully,” he had said.

Reacting to Thakur’s remark, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet that it was “a sad day, in the history of India’s Parliament.”
