Rajya Sabha passes Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 after a heated debate in the Upper House. The Bill was passed with 125 votes in favour and 105 votes against the Bill.

The controversial legislation was tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah two days after its passage in the lower house.

“A landmark day for India and our nation’s ethos of compassion and brotherhood! Glad that the #CAB2019 has been passed in the #RajyaSabha. Gratitude to all the MPs who voted in favour of the Bill. This bill will alleviate the suffering of many who faced persecution for years,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted soon after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed.

The Bill, which seeks to give citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zorastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

After heated discussions spanning seven hours, the Bill was passed with a majority of 311 votes against 80 in the Lower House where 391 members were present and voted.
