The protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 have created quite a stir in the country especially after the violence between Jamia students and Delhi Police on Sunday night.

Seeking a high-level inquiry into police entering the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday evening, its vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday said that the incident had left a deep impact on the students.

She said that ‘it’ (police action) was not accepted at all and the administration would request to the union human resource minister to set up an inquiry.

“I wanted to know whether this is going to be the norms; police intruding the campus without permission. I am particularly mentioning the police beating the students in the library. Students who were reading were charged,” she said.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday said it will hear all pleas related to the Jamia Milia Islamia clashes on Tuesday while issuing a stern warning to students to stop riots.

Citing destruction of property amid anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in the national capital, Chief justice of India SA Bobde said, If violence and destruction of public property continues, we will not hear it.

Students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Jadavpur University and IIT Mumbai have come in support of Jamia Milia Islamia students after the alleged use of police force which left several injured.

Earlier, students staged strong protests in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh against the amended Citizenship Act approved by the Parliament on Wednesday.

Several students were detained and later released in Delhi.

In Aligarh and Meerut, internet services were cut to avoid spreading of rumours.
