Date:

Certain screenshots of a tweet by a media house and some verified twitter users are being shared online with a claim that ’50 fake journalists’ were arrested by Mangaluru Police and they were carrying lethal weapons.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.

We checked and found a report published in the Business Standard on the above incident. According to the report, one of the media houses misreported the entire incident and said that the police has arrested ’50 fake journalists’ and later withdrew the story.

Kerela Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly condemned the detention of journalists and wrote, “Necessary measures must be put in place to ensure the safety of Malayalee journalists who went for reporting in Mangaluru. The State police chief is in touch with the Karnataka police. We strongly condemn the sly methods employed to malign journalists.”

Another report by The News Minute stated that the journalists, who are well known in Kerela, were released after 7 hours of detention.

A Facebook user also posted a screenshot of the news organisation providing a clarification that the journalists were detained because of the lack of ID proof.

“Clarification: The #Mangaluru police had arrested a group of journalists from #Kerala after they failed to produce id proof. The same news was reported in the media. The cops later released the journalists, ” the tweet said.

The above information proves that the claim attached to the viral tweets is misleading.
