Serena Williams knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open

Date:

China’s Wang Qiang stuns the seven-time champion by moving into the fourth round of the AO 2020.

Qiang, the world number 29 registered a 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 win over the 23 times Grand Slam Champion making it the biggest upsets of the Australian Open this season.

Serena Williams rallied from a set and a break down to level her third-round match at the AO. Qiang won the first set and had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second, but Williams broke Qiang’s serve to get back in the game, and won the tiebreaker easily 7-6(2).

William’s goal to win her 24th Grand Slam title to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record was shattered with one of the biggest upset early on in the season. Serena has lost the Wimbledon and the US Open finals in 2018 and 2019 and hasn’t added a title to her collection since 2017.

Venus Williams also retired from the tournament in the first round itself after a devastating loss to Coco Gauff in the women’s singles opener.

While people had their eyes set firmly at the seven-time champion, a lot of expectations were shattered on Friday. 23 time Grand Slam winner would have to wait to equal the all-time record for most Grand Slam titles. While nobody expected this result, Qiang has set the bar very high after knocking out the most dominating force in the tournament.
