Bengaluru: Kannada singer Sushmitha ended her life by committing suicide and has accused her husband and in laws of persistent dowry harassment.
The singer was found hanging from the ceiling in her parent’s home at Nagarbhavi.
In a Whatsapp message to her brother Sachin and her mother, she accused her husband Sharath Kumar and his family of persistent harassment over dowry and said that she preferred to end her life in her own house rather that of her in-laws.
She also asked her family not to spare either her husband or his family.

In a voice note, she said: “Sorry mom, I am paying the price for my own mistake,”
She also said:
“He tortured me by listening to his aunt. I have undergone a lot of mental torture as he used to force me to leave the house. Please don’t spare them. Sharath, Geetha and Vydehi are directly responsible for my extreme step. I didn’t want to die in their house. I fell on his feet and begged him but he didn’t change. I was being harassed from the first day of this marriage. But I didn’t share it with anyone. Please don’t spare them, otherwise I won’t rest in peace. Do my final rites in our village. Let my brother hold all the responsibility to do my final rites. Mom, I miss you. My younger brother Sachin is there to look after you. Please take care of him. Once again, I am sorry.”
Her brother received the text at 1:30 AM and immediately rushed to the house in the morning when he saw the text. However, it was too late as the singer was found hanging by then.
The Police has registered a case and is probing the matter as “dowry death”, in accordance with the Indian Evidence Act. They have filed charges against the singer’s husband, his aunt Vydehi and his sister Geetha.
The accused are all on the run and the police is trying to trace them.
The singer married Sharath Kumar, a manager in a car showroom in 2018.
She is known to have sung songs in some movies like Haalu Thuppa and Srisamanya.
