Delhi violence: Policeman, 3 other killed in Maujpur CAA clashes; over 20 injured

Delhi Police Head Constable Rattan Lal, and three civilians lost their lives on Monday during clashes between two groups in Delhi’s Gokulpuri and over 20- including 10 policemen- were injured in the massive violence that erupted in parts of Northeast Delhi.

“More than 20 people injured during a violent protest at Jafrabad today are receiving treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. They are admitted in the casualty ward with serious injuries”, an official from GTB Hospital said.

As per the latest developments, Delhi Police has identified the man in the red t-shirt as Shahrukh.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that all government and private schools to remain closed in view of the violence that erupted today.

“All government and private schools to remain closed in violence affected North East district of Delhi. I have spoke to Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal in connection with the board exams in the district, they shall be postponed.”, he said.

The violence erupted when pro and anti-CAA groups clashed in Gokulpuri. A petrol pump was also set on fire in Bhajanpura area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, North-East Ved Prakash Surya took stock of the situation and said that they have spoken to both sides to calm the situation.

“We have spoken to both sides, now the situation is calm. We are continuously speaking to people and now the situation is under control,” he said.

Meanwhile, Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed at 10 locations in the North-east district of the national capital after the clash.

On Sunday, stone-pelting took place between two groups in Maujpur due to which the police resorted to firing tear gas shells in order to disperse the mob. Maujpur area is close to Jaffrabad metro station area, where women are holding a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) amid heavy security.

The entry and exit gates at Jaffrabad Metro Station had also been closed on Sunday morning due to the anti-CAA protest.
