COVID-19 | Top 10 developments in India this Monday morning

The number of Covid-19 cases in India rose by 505 in 24 hours to 3,577 overnight as testing picked up pace to check and contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here are the top 10 developments in India this Monday Morning-

1. Millions of Indians across the country switched off lights at their homes and lit candles, diyas or turned on mobile phone torches at 9:00 pm on Sunday, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to show nation’s “collective resolve and solidarity” in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

2. A spreading coronavirus pandemic infected 505 Indians in the last 24 hours, increasing the total count of Covid-19 cases in India to 3,577, latest data from the health ministry showed. This includes 3,219 active cases, 275 people who have been either cured, discharged or migrated, and 83 deaths.

3. Former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan sees the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic as the “greatest emergency” India has faced since independence.

4. Retirement fund body Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation will accept online its subscribers’ Aadhaar card as valid proof to rectify their date of birth and ensure that their PF accounts are KYC compliant, the labour ministry said on Sunday.

5. The government has set up 28,000 relief camps and shelters across the country to house daily wage workers that were migrating back to villages in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown, Joint Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said at the health ministry’s daily briefing in New Delhi on Sunday.

6. The Indian Council of Medical Research, has already issued guidelines with regards to use of rapid antibody-based tests in Covid-19 hotspots, health ministry officials said at the daily coronavirus press briefing in New Delhi today.

7. As part of Ayushman Bharat, not only government labs, but also private labs will offer free testing and Covid-19-related treatment to more than 50 crore Indians.

8. The spike in Covid-19 cases in India is due to the infections that cropped up at Tablighi Jammat, the religious congregation that took place at Nizammuddin Dargah in Delhi between March 1 and March 15, the health ministry said today. “India added 472 cases since yesterday, with 11 additional deaths,” Joint Health Secretary Lav Agarwal briefed the media on Sunday.
