A video is being shared on social media where people can be seen robbing a store. The claims are being made that the video was captured in South Africa during the ongoing lockdown due to COVID-19.

“Lockdown in South Africa backfires and residents could not wait to be killed by hunger, ” the caption read.

We extracted the keyframes of the video using the InVid tool and then did a search using the screengrabs and relevant keywords.

In results, we found a link to a Facebook video dated 2018. The description of the video read, “Pick n Pay Express at BP Clocktower in Mitchells Plain being looted. WC, Cape Town, Mitchells Plain, C/O Eisleben RD & Lavender, BP Clocktower.”

The video was uploaded by Crime Intelligence & Community Awareness, South Africa. The page describes itself as a “Breaking Newsfeed page for major crimes and events which may affect a community”


We also found several local media coverage of the incident.
