Working from home is more productive? Think again says a survey on IT workers

Date:

A staggering 99.8 percent of IT workers are not productive working from home and only a handful of them at 0.2% have higher productivity. This critical finding from a survey conducted by the SCIKEY Mindmatch, an innovation-based research firm, can throw a lot of light on the “work from home” challenges in times of the COVID-19 crisis.

Another finding which will be a cause for concern is the fact that 99.8% of the workers suffer from one of the following traits: reluctant to learn new skills, lack of communication skills and lack of planning and execution.

These are the skills that will stand out in the times of the fourth industrial revolution, according to a report by the World Economic Forum. However, India which is set to lose about 67% of its jobs to automation (2017 World Bank Report) is yet to encourage the cultivation of these skills.

As per this survey, companies can identify the skills of the employees to enhance their productivity.

It points out that 16.97% of the employees are challenge-driven and can work seamlessly when given a task. Whereas 17% of the employees are instructions driven and will work only when given clear instructions, thus understanding the mindset of the employee is pertinent to improving productivity.

Another 40% of the employees are highly logical and need to work under conditions that encourage this trait. Moreover, about 12.7% of the employees thrive under conditions that encourage social setup and hence work from home becomes a struggle.

The survey was conducted amongst 10,000 workers aiming to secure jobs in the IT and ITes Sectors.

The findings are a step forward to help companies customise effective ‘work from home’ policies that will improve the quality of work at home.
