COVID-19: Total authority to lift lockdown, says Trump

Date:

Even as the US is struggling to contain the deadly Coronavirus, President Donald Trump has indicated his intention to lift the lockdown and said that he has total authority in doing so.

He argued with the press reporters at the White House while addressing the media and said that the number of cases has plateaued in the US and hence, there is a reasonable clause to withdraw the lockdown imposed in the US.

The US President had a series of flip flops in this regard. He was first against imposing any lockdown conditions and then favoured lifting the lockdown during the festival of Easter and finally has not indicated that the lockdown will be lifted by May 1.

However, according to the US constitution, law and order and public safety are subjects that are handled by the the States and Trump will have to take them into confidence before announcing any policy decision.

Only 10 states till date have announced their intention to lift the lockdown conditions which include opening up of restaurants and bars.

Trump’s vindictive attitude hasn’t gone well with other Governors who have urged him to reconsider his position due to the rising number of cases in the US and the nearly 30,000 deaths due to this virus.

New York is one such state.
