Greece: 6.6-magnitude earthquake hits Crete; ‘tsunami warning’ likely to be issued

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Greek island of Crete on Saturday. The US Geological Service (USGS) said the quake was centered in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 16 kilometers.

There is a potential Tsunami warning in place for the island, as reported by the Daily Star quoting the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The epicenter of the earthquake was said to be 141 km south of Crete’s capital Iraklion.

Two more aftershocks, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and 4.1, followed in the same general area as the original earthquake.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Meanwhile, shortly before this seismic event in Greece, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake had hit near southern Puerto Rico.

As per the USGS, the quake near southern Puerto Rico hit just off the coast of towns including Guánica and Guayanilla, which had earlier witnessed extensive destruction an loss of life and property due to a quake in early January.
