COVID-19: US records lowest number of deaths in a month; Treasury seeks $3 trillion in aid

Date:

In a sign of some relief, the US has recorded 1015 deaths in the last 24 hours which happens to be the lowest single-day death toll recorded in the last month. Meanwhile, to boost the health infrastructure, the US Treasury Department has sought USD 3 trillion in aid.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, the US has recorded a total number of 1.17 million cases and 69,689 deaths as of Monday.

US President Trump has said that the US may see up to 100,000 deaths. However, experts have said that the death toll may go up to 250,000.

The US Treasury for the April-June Quarter hopes to borrow USD 2.9 trillion. This is almost 5 times the amount that was borrowed during the subprime crisis of 2008.

This amount is expected to be spent towards a bailout, credit creation, and supporting small businesses.

Meanwhile, a report by the US Homeland Security said that China may have deliberately hidden the information about the outbreak of the virus to hoard supplies of essential items.

The Chinese media targeted the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who had earlier remarked that there is strong evidence that the virus originated in Wuhan and the US will not spare anyone responsible for causing harm to the world.

The Chinese media asked him to share the evidence. This is a fresh dispute in the already strained ties between the US and China.
