With over 29,000 deaths, UK now has highest death toll in Europe

Date:

With more than 29,000 deaths reported because of Covid-19, the United Kingdom has now overtaken Italy to have the highest death toll in Europe due to the deadly virus.

As per data provided by Johns Hopkins University, UK’s death toll has now risen to 29,502 overtaking Italy which, with 29,315 deaths, was so far the worst affected country in Europe.

In fact, several other reports have claimed that more than 32,000 people have died because of Covid-19 in UK.

There has been a lot of criticism within the UK on how the Boris Johnson government was slow in devising a response to the pandemic which has killed over 2.54 lakh people across the globe.

Johnson, who himself was diagnosed with Covid-19 and was admitted to the ICU before recovering from the ailment, has been perceived to have been reluctant to impose a national lockdown when cases first started coming in. His government has also been under fire for inadequate arrangements of protective equipment for frontline health workers.

With UK having remained under a lockdown for six weeks now, Johnson has claimed that the country is past the peak of the pandemic and that it was on a downward slope.

But with the country now reporting the maximum deaths in Europe so far, those claims will be met with much more skepticism.
