COVID-19 | With over 6,600 cases, India witnesses record rise for second consecutive day

India witnessed yet another biggest ever spike of 6,654 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,25,101, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.

As many as 137 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,720.

Out of the total number of cases, 69,597 are active and 51,784 have been cured/discharged or have migrated.

This comes just a day after the country had witnessed its former sharpest spike on Friday (6,088 cases).

The sharp rise in cases has been argued to be a resultant of the increased testing capacity.

A total of 1,15,364 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The ICMR’s bulletin reflects that a total of 28,34,798 samples of coronavirus have been tested so far. 

Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours with 2,940 new patients, followed by 784 cases in Tamil Nadu. The two states have the highest number of cases in India. While Maharashtra has recorded over 44,000 cases so far, Tamil Nadu has reported over 14,000 patients.

There were 591 COVID-19 cases and no deaths reported in Delhi in the last 24 hours. Total number of cases in the national capital rises to 12,910, including 6,412 active cases. The national capital has the fourth highest number of cases in the country falling behind Gujarat that reports a total of 13,268 cases.

The Central government on Friday revised the advisory on the use of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as prophylactic for COVID-19 infection, expanding the use of the medicine for asymptomatic healthcare and frontline workers deployed in non-COVID and COVID areas.

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday revised advisory on the use of HCQ as prophylactic for COVID-19 infection. The decision came after the National Task Force (NTF) for COVID-19 constituted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reviewed the use of HCQ for prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection for high-risk population based on the emerging evidence on its safety and efficacy.

The nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 has been extended till May 31.
