Trump threatens to close down social media platforms

Date:

Following micro-blogging site, Twitter calling his tweets “unsubstantiated” and adding fact-check links, US President Donald Trump has threatened to close down social media platforms.

The threats came after Twitter fact-checked two of Trump’s tweets pertaining to mail-in ballots. The President had questioned the veracity of this method and had stated that this would make it easier for his opponents to rig the upcoming Presidential elections in the US.

“Republicans feel that Social Media platforms totally silence conservatives’ voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that,” Trump tweeted.

In another tweet, the US President said, “Big Tech is doing everything in their very considerable power to CENSOR in advance of the 2020 Election. If that happens, we no longer have our freedom. I will never let it happen! They tried hard in 2016 and lost. Now they are going absolutely CRAZY. Stay Tuned!!!”

Further the White House Spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany added that the President will sign an executive order soon to regulate social media companies. However, no details were provided regarding this.

Twitter has a challenge as many experts have opined that Trump and a sizeable chunk of his supporters on Twitter could very well shift to another platform.
