EAM hits out at Rahul Gandhi over Galawan clashes

Date:

The Congress party it seems has found political capital in the deadly Galwan Valley clashes which claimed the lives of 20 bravehearts of the Indian Army.

Attaching the screen grab of an interview of conducted by a leading publication of former Army commander Gen J J Singh, Rahul Gandhi tweeted asking why were our soldiers sent unarmed.

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, who spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Wednesday and laid the facts on the table regarding provocation by Chinese troops leading to the violent face-off, hit out at Rahul Gandhi.

“Let us get the facts straight. All troops on border duty always carry arms, especially when leaving post. Those at Galwan on 15 June did so. Long-standing practice (as per 1996 & 2005 agreements) not to use firearms during faceoffs,” Dr Jaishankar tweeted within hours of Rahul Gandhi’s question.

The seven-hour long violent face-off involved reinforcements from both sides. Though it was mutually agreed upon to de-escalate from the disputed site, Chinese soldiers attacked Indian soldiers with stones, iron roads and nail-studded clubs. Some soldiers died by falling off from cliffs into the river below.
