Fact Check: 2019 picture of last rites of Army officer shared as recent

A picture of a boy hugging a deceased soldier is being shared on social media with a claim that the picture was taken recently.

The caption indicates that the officer lost his life during the India-China face-off at Galwan Valley in Ladakh, which took place on the night of June 15-16.

“An orphaned son. A widowed wife. A broken father. A shattered mother. This is the price of our freedom.#Ladakh,” the caption read.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that it is old.

On putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, we found the same image on a website, Defence stories. The article was dated July 1, 2019. Lt Col Subramaniam was suffering from high fever and passed away due to multiple-organ failure.

As per the article, the picture is of the last rites of Lt Col Anand Subramaniam of 4 Sikh Light Infantry of the Indian Army. He passed away at the age of 34 in Assam.

Lt Col Subramaniam who hailed from Thakkala Villukuri village of Tamil Nadu was a recipient of Shaurya Chakra.

We also found a report on the same on the website of a Tamil Daily, Dinakaran, published on July 1, 2019. However, the article mentioned that Lt Col Anand passed away in Arunachal Pradesh.

 

The picture of his last rites was uploaded on many Facebook pages.

From the above information, it is clear that the picture in circulation is old and hence the post in question is misleading.
