TikTok says it will comply with government’s “interim order”

Date:

Soon after the Indian government blocked 59 chinese apps, one of the most popular apps, TikTok’s management issued a statement saying they will comply with what they are calling an interim order. Under section 69A of the Information Technology Act, the government has banned these apps after receiving many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.

TikTok India has issued a statement today saying, “The government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and are in the process of complying with it. We have been invited to meet concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and has not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese government. “Further we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity.”

TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first time internet users.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that China is strongly concerned, verifying the situation.

“We want to stress that Chinese Govt always asks Chinese businesses to abide by international & local laws-regulations. Indian Govt has a responsibility to uphold the legal rights of international investors including Chinese ones,” Lijian said.

We will wait to see if the government will give these 59 Chinese apps to represent their case against this ban.
