Fact Check: Old Picture of Detained Myanmar Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Shared As Recent

Declaring a state of emergency for one year, Myanmar military staged a coup and placed senior political leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi under detention. In this backdrop, a picture of Suu Kyi is being shared on social media, where she can be seen crying.

The picture is being shared with a caption, “She is myanmar president . Who killed lot of rohingya Muslim. Now she is crying . She arrested by myanmar army .Allah save all Muslims . Amin.” (sic)

FACT CHECK 

We fact-checked the above picture and found that it is OLD.

We put the picture through Reverse Image search and found an article by The Guardian dated September 4, 2017, featuring the same image.

Since the picture was credited to Getty Image, We also checked for the original image on their website.

From the description, it is clear that the picture was taken on August 17, 2017.

This proves that the picture in circulation is OLD.

What happened in Myanmar? 

Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other senior figures from the of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were arrested on February 1, 2021, and the power was seized by the military with Min Aung Hlaing as commander-in-chief. The coup came after allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 elections as the ruling NLD secured a landslide victory.

After taking over, the military declared a year-long state of emergency in the country and later announced that 24 ministers and deputies had been removed, and 11 replacements had been named, including in finance, health, the interior and foreign affairs.
