A video where people can be seen chanting ‘Modi Sarkar Hosh Me Aau, Desh Ko Bechna Bandh Karo’ (Modi government wake up, stop selling the country) slogans, in front of the LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) office, is being shared on social media with a claim that trade union members protested against the government, in the backdrop of the recent annual budget that was presented on February 1, 2021.
“LIC में भी विद्रोह शुरू हुआ, ट्रेड यूनियनों ने मोदी को अपने निर्णय वापिस लेने की पुरज़ोर मांग के साथ नारे लगाए,” the Facebook post read.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video is OLD.
We extracted keyframes of the video using InVid Tool and found that the same video was uploaded on YouTube in February 2020.

We also noticed ‘Jaipur’ and ‘All India Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes & Buddhists LIC Employees Welfare Association’ written on the board on the wall.
Based on this, we ran a keyword search and found multiple media reports from 2020 stating that LIC employee unions across India protested against the government’s decision to sell a part of its holding in the life insurer by initial public offering (IPO). The reports can be seen here, here and here.
This proves that the video in circulation is old.
We also ran another search and found media reports from 2021 carrying the announcement made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech, regarding the government’s proposal of disinvestment of the corporation. This was not welcomed by LIC employees and they protested against the decision in Coimbatore.
During the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the initial public offering of LIC will be brought in through requisite amendments in the session itself.
This proves that the post in circulation is misleading as the video in the post is old.
