As President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the newly-built Motera Stadium which was renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium ahead of the pink-ball Test between India and England, the opposition has voiced out their objection on the renaming of the world’s largest cricket stadium which was earlier named after Sardar Patel
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said,”Beautiful how the truth reveals itself. Narendra Modi stadium – Adani end – Reliance end With Jay Shah presiding,” the Congress leader tweeted. He also used the hashtag ‘Hum Do Humare Do’ in his tweet.

Following Rahul Gandhi, with reference to the RSS, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said in a tweet, “Maybe they just realised the stadium was named for a Home Minister who had banned their parent organisation!”
Maybe they just realised the stadium was named for a Home Minister who had banned their parent organisation! Or maybe this is advance booking to ensure the next visiting Head of State is hosted here, like Trump? Or is this the beginning of a legacy-creation-thru-labelling spree? https://t.co/yMppcTbSw5

These statements came even from Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rajeev Satav, among others, tweeted against the move.
“इस मिट्टी में कुछ अनूठा है, जो कई बाधाओं के बावजूद हमेशा महान आत्माओं का निवास रहा है।”

Renaming Motera cricket stadium from Sardar Patel to Narendra Modi is an absolute disgrace. This shows how narcissistic our PM has become. This is outrageous and a clear sign of autocratic dictatorship.https://t.co/sDi4tKKhZW

The Rashtriya Janata Dal, said: “The true colour of the self-styled ruler is now clearly exposed! This is also the first time in 70 years! But there will be no doubt for the last time! Self-indulgence has yet to come down to shamelessness!”
Hardik Patel also slammed the Central Government for renaming the Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium after Narendra Modi, calling it an insult to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
“The world’s largest Ahmedabad-based Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium has been renamed as Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, is this not an insult to Sardar Patel? The BJP that asked for votes in the name of Sardar Patel is now insulting Sardar Saheb. The people of Gujarat will not bear the insult of Sardar Patel,” the Congress leader said.

Responding to it, the BJP strongly hit back stating that significant sports infrastructure, awards, and trophies in the country have been named after members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad targeted Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. “Have Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi ever praised world’s tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia? Have they visited it? What more can be said?” Mr Prasad said.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the criticism and tweeted, “The name of the whole Sports Complex is Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. Only the name of one Cricket Stadium, within that complex has been named as #NarendramodiStadium Ironically, “The Parivaar”, which never respected Sardar Patel, even after his death, is now making hue & cry!”

Apart from this, it is relevant to note that several important institutions and awards in sports have been named after former congress leaders, including the country’s highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
The Khel Ratna Award is named after former Prime Minister and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s father. It is conferred on sportspersons for spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports for over a period of four years.
The newly-built Motera Stadium was renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium ahead of the pink-ball Test between India and England. Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju were also in attendance on the occasion.
On February 24, 2019, the then President of United States, Donald Trump had visited Motera Stadium for the ‘Namaste Trump’ event, and exactly one year later, the newly-built stadium will now be hosting its first international cricket match.
