Fact Check: Old Statement By Cong Leader Raj Babbar Recirculated After Chhattisgarh Maoist Attack

Date:

After 22 security personnel were martyred and 30 others injured in the dastardly Maoist  attack along the Sukma-Bijapur border in Chhattisgarh, a newspaper clipping started doing rounds on social media claiming that actor turned politician Raj Babbar said that Naxalites are revolutionaries.

The headline of the article in Hindi read: “राजबब्बर बोले, क्रांति कर रहे हैं नक्सली”

(Translation: Raj Babbar said, Naxalites are revolutionary)

A user shared the clipping with a caption: छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य के बीजापुर जिले के तर्रेम क्षेत्र में 22 सुरक्षाकर्मी नक्सली मुठभेड़ में शहीद होते हैं। पर कांग्रेस के नेता राज बब्बर कह रहे हैं नक्सली क्रांति कर रहे हैं,ऐसा कहने वाले बब्बर अब किसी भी प्रकार की सुरक्षा के हकदार हैं क्या?

(Translation: 22 security personnel were martyred in Naxalite encounter in Tarrem area of Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state. But Congress leader Raj Babbar is saying that Naxalites are revolutionaries, does Babbar who says something like this deserve any kind of protection?)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.

Firstly, on putting the picture through Reverse Image Search along with relevant keywords, like ‘Raj Babbar’, ‘Chhattisgarh’, ‘Naxal’ we found a media report published by Aaj Tak dated November 4, 2018. The headline of the article read, “Ruckus over Raj Babbar’s statement, said Naxalites came out for revolution” (Translated from Hindi)

As per the article, in a press conference held in Raipur, Congress leader Raj Babbar in response to a question on Naxalism, said that guns do not solve the issues. Their questions have to be answered, and those who have come for a revolution can not be stopped by scaring them.

We found another report by Nav Bharat Times dated November 4, 2018. The headline of the report read, “Raj Babbar’s take on Naxalism, people have come for revolution”. (Translated from Hindi)

Further, we found a video on newswire ANI‘s Twitter handle in which Babbar can be heard talking about the issue.

To check if the leader has made any statement on the recent Naxal attack, we scanned his Twitter handle and found a tweet dated April 5, 2021, in which he has expressed condolences for the families of the soldiers who were killed on-field and termed Naxalism as the enemy of internal security.

In conclusion, upon analysing our findings, it is safe to say that an old statement made by  Raj Babbar is being shared as a recent one.
