Tokyo Olympics: Indian Athletes Who Have Qualified For Tokyo Games So Far

The number of Indian athletes participating in the Summer Olympic Games has seen a rise in each of its past three editions and all signs point to the finest athletes continuing that trend for India at Tokyo 2020.

So far, 101 Indian competitors from 14 sports have qualified or been named to their respective federations’ final squads for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics, which will begin on July 23.

Below are the names of all Indians qualified for the Olympics in Tokyo, sorted by their sport, discipline and category:

Archery

1. Tarundeep Rai, Men’s Recurve
2. Atanu Das, Men’s Recurve
3. Pravin Jadhav, Men’s Recurve
4. Deepika Kumari, Women’s Recurve

At Tokyo 2020, the men’s trio will participate as a team.

Athletics

India has never been good in athletics at the Olympics, but young javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh have raised hopes this time.

After finishing third in the World Athletics Championships in 2019, an Indian team, led by Asian Games gold medalist Muhammed Anas, will compete in the 4×400 mixed relay, which will make its debut in Tokyo 2020.

KT Irfan, however, provided the first ray of optimism when he became the first Indian athlete to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in March 2019.

Badminton

When PV Sindhu competes in the women’s singles event in Tokyo, she will be looking to improve on her silver medal from the previous Games. In the men’s singles, B Sai Praneeth will join her, as will the combination of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

Boxing

At the Asia Oceania boxing Olympic qualifiers in Amman, Jordan, Indian boxers punched up to nine tickets to the Tokyo Olympics.

Golf

In the men’s and women’s events, respectively, India’s participation in golf at Tokyo 2020 will be limited to Anirban Lahiri and Aditi Ashok.

The two golfers made their Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and will be hoping for a better showing in Tokyo 2020.

Hockey

The Indian men’s hockey team, which is ranked fourth in the world, will be making its 20th Olympic Games appearance, while the women’s team will be making their third appearance and second in a row.

Both teams qualified in November 2019 and will compete in Tokyo 2020 with a 16 member roster.

Wrestling

At least seven wrestlers from India will compete in Tokyo 2020. The Wrestling Association of India has confirmed their seats for Tokyo 2020, while the grapplers have obtained a quota berth for their country in their respective categories.

Sakshi Malik, the bronze medalist from Rio 2016, will not wrestle in the Tokyo Olympics since Sonam Malik won the quota in the 62kg division.

Shooting

So far, 15 Indian shooters have qualified for the Olympics, giving them the country’s largest presence at any Games.

Youngsters Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan are the top-ranked men’s and women’s shooters in the 10m Air Rifle, respectively, and Manu Bhaker has had a spectacular season, so medal hopes are high.

While the following athletes earned a quota spot in their respective categories, the National Rifle Association of India decided on their participation in the showcase event (NRAI). Chinki Yadav’s quota was given to rifle shooter Elavenil Valarivan in the final team.
