India Works On Counter-Drone Strategy; DRDO’s Anti-Drone Tech Capable To Detect, Intercept & Destroy Small Drones

Date:

India is looking forward to formulating a comprehensive counter-drone strategy to preclude attacks such as the one on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir.

Measures and strategies to counter “weaponized drones used for terror purposes against strategic and commercial assets” were discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 29, NDTV reported. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval were also present at the meeting.

In the meeting, discussions were held on expeditious framing of a broad-based policy to deal with emerging security threats and futuristic challenges facing the country.

As per news agency PTI, the defence ministry and the three services will play a leading role in the formulation of the policy. The three forces have been told to adequately focus on bridging the gaps in effectively dealing with new-age challenges such as drone attacks and go for the procurement of the necessary hardware to contain those.

The Air defence units of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are responsible for monitoring all manned and unmanned air operations in the country’s airspace.

The meeting came in the backdrop of Sunday’s drone attack on the Jammu airbase in which two Indian Air Force personnel suffered minor injuries. The explosions took place a little before 2 am at the high-security airport located around 14 kilometres from the border with Pakistan.

The government has handed over the probe into the attack to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

DRDO’s anti-drone technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed anti-drone technology to shoot down hostile drones in the range of two to three kilometres.

DRDO chief G Satheesh Reddy on Tuesday said that the counter-drone technology developed by his organisation could provide the armed forces with the capability to swiftly detect, intercept and destroy small drones that pose a security threat, Hindustan Times reported.

Reportedly, the military’s research and development agency has demonstrated these counter-drone technologies to various security agencies in the past. The system was also deployed for VVIP protection during Republic Day 2020, during the bilateral visit of former United States President Donald Trump, Independence Day 2020 and this year’s Republic Day parade.
