Fact Check: Fake News About Demise Of Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar Goes Viral

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar was hospitalised and kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after she tested positive for Covid-19. Amid this, social media is filled with posts claiming that the 93-year-old singer has passed away. 

The post is shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that can roughly be translated in English to, “Very sad demise of Lata Mangeshkar ji, the owner of the world’s most beautiful voice. om Shanti.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE. 

Starting with our investigation, we did a keyword search and found many news articles stating that false rumours about Lata Mangeshkar’s demise are being shared on social media. 

Searching further, we found a tweet by Union Minister Smriti Irani dated January 22, that stated, “Request from Lata Didi’s family to not spread rumours. She is responding well to treatment and god willing will return home soon. Let us avoid speculation & continue to pray for Lata Didi’s speedy recovery and wellbeing.” 

More searches directed us to a tweet uploaded from the official Twitter handle of Lata Mangeshkar on January 22, that stated, “Heartfelt request for the disturbing speculation to stop. Update from Dr Pratit Samdani, Breach Candy Hospital. Lata Didi is showing positive signs of improvement from earlier and is under treatment in the ICU. We look forward and pray for her speedy healing and homecoming.”

We found out that various news reports stated that “Legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar’s health condition has been improving. On Sunday, Dr Pratit Samdani, who is treating the singer at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, shared the latest health update.”

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6, 2022, at the age of 92. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after testing positive for Covid-19 in January 2022 and was also later diagnosed with pneumonia.
