Messaging And Action – How Government Is Working To Evacuate Indians From Ukraine

Date:

The Ukrainian airspace has been restricted to civil aircraft operations since the morning of February 24th. Indian officials and the embassy in Ukraine and neighbouring countries have been working tirelessly to evacuate students from the country.

On Sunday, Air India’s third evacuation flight (AI1940), carrying 240 Indian nationals arrived in Delhi after departing from Budapest, Hungary.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar tweeted photos of the third flight of Operation Ganga.

The second evacuation flight (AI1942) from Bucharest, Romania, landed earlier at 2.45 a.m. on Sunday, carrying 250 Indian citizens who were stuck in Ukraine.

The first evacuation flight (AI1944) also brought the first batch of 219 people back from Bucharest to Mumbai on Saturday evening.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation, greeted the evacuees at the airport by handing out roses.

More importantly, he sent out a message on behalf of the Government of India.
With MoS External Affairs, V Muraleedharan by his side, Scindia told the evacuees to spread the message that PM Modi’s government will not rest till each and every India is back home safely.

It was the same message delivered personally inside another evacuation flight by India’s Ambassador to Romania.

The Indians who arrived at the Ukraine-Romania border and the Ukraine-Hungary border were escorted by road to Bucharest and Budapest, with the help of Indian government officials. They were then flown back home on Air India flights.

In a recent development, the Indian embassy in Ukraine said that Ukraine Railways is also organising free emergency trains from Kyiv on a first-come, first-served basis, and advised Indian citizens to avoid conflict zones.
