Fact Check: Shot Of Firefighter Wearing ‘Edmonton’ Jacket Shared With Misleading Claim

Date:

A screenshot is being widely shared on social media with a claim that CNN aired images of fires in Canada in the name of Ukraine. It is being further claimed in the post that firefighters are wearing Edmonton jackets which are from Canada. Edmonton is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta.

The text embedded on the viral image screenshot reads, “Ukraine that Edmonton firefighters are on the scene. CNN never fail to deliver, the comedy that is. The mainstream media is too busy lying they forgot to remove Edmonton Canada.”

Here’s the link to the above post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Starting with our investigation, we performed a keyword search and found a Facebook post published on Firefighter Aid Ukraine on March 28. The post reads, “Sharing this post from 2017 when we were distributing donated bunker gear in Lviv. See the “Edmonton” on the back of the jacket? There is no conspiracy. Our firefighter friends and colleagues are in harms way and we will continue to support them.”

We found another post on the Facebook page dated March 29 that stated, “So our previous photo doesn’t prove we were in Ukraine with Edmonton fire gear. So here you go. I took this photo on my iPhone. Shows the date, time and location. Not to mention the Ukraine fire truck in the background.”

The Facebook page also carried the viral CNN screenshot that stated, “Thanks to Stu Abercrombie for catching this shot of Ukrainian firefighters near Lviv wearing gear donated by Edmonton firefighters.”

Searching further, we found an article published on transforming.edmonton.ca that stated, “EDMONTON fire jacket image draws international media attention for Firefighter Aid Ukraine.”

More searches directed us to a Fact Check article published by CNN “Debunking the false conspiracy theory about an Edmonton firefighter coat in Ukraine.” The article carried the viral image with the description, “CNN footage from the scene of a fire at a fuel storage facility in the Ukrainian city of Lviv on Saturday. One firefighter was seen in a coat that said “EDMONTON” on the back — because it was donated from the Canadian city of Edmonton.”

We also checked the website of the Edmonton Fire Fighters Union which stated, “The Edmonton Firefighters Union is an affiliate of the International Association of Fire Fighters and represents over 1000 members consisting of uniformed dispatchers, firefighters, inspectors, investigators, mechanics, and support personnel that serve the citizens of the City of Edmonton.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral claim is misleading.
