Fact Check: Did Disney Shareholders Lose $2.4 Billion In A Single Day? Here’s The Truth

Date:

Recently, a screenshot of a purported news article has gone viral on social media platforms with a claim that Disney shareholders have lost $2.4 Billion in a single day.

Disney has been surrounded by controversies after its response to a Republican-backed bill that bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for students. The bill was signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on March 28, 2022. Disney CEO Bob Chapek on March 21, 2022, stated that the company made a mistake by remaining silent on the legislation.

A Facebook user shared the screenshot with a caption saying, “Woke yet or your mouse in a trap??”

Several Twitter users are sharing the link to the article whose screengrab is going viral with a similar caption.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim and found it to be a satire piece.

We ran a search and found that the original article was published on a satire website ‘Patriot Party Press.’

The ‘about us’ section of the website clearly states that the website publishes satire articles. The site is part of the “America’s Last Line of Defense” network of satire websites.

Moreover, we did not find any recent credible media reports stating that Disney shareholders suffered a loss of $2.4 billion in a day.

Back in November 2020, during the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, Disney said that the pandemic outbreak cost its parks, experiences, and products segment around $2.4 billion in lost operating income during its most recent period.

Therefore, with the above information, we can conclude that the viral claim is false.
