Fact Check: Does This Picture Show People Offering Namaz in Nainital?

Date:

A photo collage is widely being shared on social media to purportedly compare the current situation of Nainital with what it was 12 years ago. The first image shows a road with pedestrians and the text reads: ‘Nainital 2010’ — the second image shows people offering Namaz on road and claims to be the photo from Nainital in 2022.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check, and found the claim to be fake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search with the first image, we found it was published on the website Indian Hotel on April 26, 2022. The image was shared with a title: “10 Best Hotels in Nainital Near Mall Road for a Memorable Stay.”

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search with the second image, we found that the same image was uploaded by Al Jazeera on January 24, 2018. The article associated with the image reads: “More than two million Muslims from over 130 countries attended the annual Biswa Ijtema gathering in Bangladesh.”

Hence, we can ascertain that though the first image is of Nainital, the second image is from Bangladesh. Thus, the viral claim is fake.
