Fact Check: Old Video from Indonesia Mendaciously Linked to Bangladesh Floods

Date:

Bangladesh is witnessing heavy floods amid incessant rain, and according to recent news reports, in the north-eastern Sylhet region of Bangladesh, floodwaters breached a major embankment, inundating dozens of villages and killing at least 10 people.

Against this backdrop, a video is being widely shared on social media, showing a strong flow of water washing away a house. It has been claimed that the horrific visuals are from Sylhet.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption in Bengali: “ও আরশের মালিক তুমি হেফাজত কর আমাদের, আমাদের সিলেট আজ ভালো নেই” . (English translation: “Oh Lord of the Throne, protect us, our Sylhet is not good today.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a news report published by Insider on December 8, 2021, that carried the video in question. The headline reads: “Watch as heavy rainfall in Indonesia washes away homes and floods streets.”

The same video was also attached to another news report published on December 6, 2021. According to the article: “Heavy rainfall on the Indonesian island of Lombok has led to two houses getting washed away by an overflowing river. The footage filmed on Monday (December 6) shows the houses one after another ripped apart under the heavy stream.”

The same video was also uploaded on the YouTube channel of a local Indonesian media house on December 8, 2021. The video description reads: “Two residents’ houses dragged by floods in Soppeng”. Soppeng Regency is a landlocked regency in the south Sulawesi province of Indonesia.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is being falsely linked to the Bangladesh floods. Therefore, the video claim is misleading.
