Fact Check: Did President Biden Ignore PM Modi at Quad Summit? Here’s the Truth

Date:

A video showing US President Joe Biden purportedly ignoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing the rounds on social media. The video is being circulated in the backdrop of QUAD summit that took place in Tokyo on May 24.

Social media users are sharing the video with a Hindi caption: “आज फिर अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति ने मोदी जी को नजरअंदाज किया… 150 करोड़ भारतीयों के पीएम का यह अपमान नहीं सहेगा हिन्दुस्तान”
(English translation: “Today, the President of America ignored Modi ji again… India will not tolerate insulting of the PM of 150-crore Indians.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

We ran a keyword search along with a Reverse Image Search of the keyframes and found the longer version of the same video, uploaded by several media organisations.

In the longer videos, President Biden can be seen talking and laughing with PM Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

In another video uploaded by NDTV on May 24, President Biden can be seen shaking hands with PM Modi as the leaders of India, United States, Japan and Australia attended the second in-person meeting of Quad leaders.

On searching further, we also found multiple reports stating that President Joe Biden praised PM Modi for handling the Covid-19 situation in India “successfully in a democratic manner”. The reports can be seen here and here.

Thus, from the above fact-check, it is clear that a clipped video is being circulated online to create a misleading narrative.
