FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be misleading. as the viral video shows an overcrowded train from Bangladesh, not India.

Going through the viral video carefully, the NM team identified a watermark of an Instagram user, @Saudalissa. And his Instagram account carries a video, posted on April 8, 2024, informing that a Bangladeshi train experiencing heavy traffic with passengers as Eid ul-Fitr approaches.

The caption of the post reads: “Bangladesh trains see heavy traffic with passengers as Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, as workers head to their villages for leave. The situation is so dangerous that the passengers on the roofs of the trains have to bend when crossing bridges under which other busy trains pass.”

With a keyword search, we also found that the video had been covered by multiple mainstream media organisations, including NDTV and Navbharat Times, on April 14, 2024. According to the NDTV report, the video originates from Bangladesh, where passengers unable to secure reservations to travel back to their villages for Eid ul-Fitr resorted to sitting on top of the trains.

The viral video was also found on various YouTube channels, confirming that it was from Bangladesh, NOT India.

According to a photograph of Bangladeshi trains on the stock photo website Alamy, the train scene in the viral video matches with the image of a Bangladeshi train, further confirming its origin.

Here is the comparison between the viral and original picture:

Hence, it is evident that the video in question shows the plight of Bangladeshi train commuters, unrelated to India.
