Fact Check: AMU’s Allocated Central Budget Has Not Been Reduced to ₹9 crore

Date:

A post is extensively shared on social media, claiming that the Central government has cut down the fund provided to Aligarh Muslim University from ₹62 crore to ₹9 crore.

The post is shared with a text: “अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम यूनिवर्सिटी का वार्षिक बजट 62 करोड़ से घटा कर 9 करोड़ किया गया.” (English translation: “The yearly budget of Aligarh Muslim University has reduced from ₹62 crore to ₹9 crore.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be misleading.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found a report published by a website Muslim Mirror. The report suggests: “The allocation for AMU reduced from ₹1,520.10 crore in 2020-21 to ₹1,214.63 crore in 2021-22. It marked a decline of nearly ₹306 crore.”

According to The Wire, in response to an unstarred question in Lok Sabha on July 18, 2022 about the fund allocation to AMU, the Ministry of Education said: “The overall allocation had increased from ₹673.98 crore in 2014-15, it had shown a marked decline of nearly ₹306 crore from ₹1,520.10 crore in 2020-21 to ₹1,214.63 crore in 2021-22. And in the current financial year, the allocation was ₹302.32 crore in the first quarter.”

The details of the fund allocation to AMU were also present in the official document provided to Lok Sabha. According to the document, ₹1,520.10 crore funds were allocated to AMU in 2021-22, which was then reduced to ₹1,214.63 crore in 2021-22.

Thus, we can ascertain that though funds have been reduced, it is not as low as mentioned in the viral post. So, the viral claim is misleading.
