Fact Check: Old Video from Odisha Falsely Linked to Jalore Incident

Date:

Death of the nine-year-old Dalit student in the Jalore district of Rajasthan has left the entire nation in shock, leading to protests in many parts of the country. Amidst the ongoing protest, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was detained at the Jodhpur airport, while he was on his way to meet the family of the Dalit boy Indra Meghwal.

Against this backdrop, a video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a group of men attacking police personnel and their vehicle. The post claims that it is a protest by the members of Bhim Army.

The video is shared with the text: “भीम आर्मी से पंगा लेना पडे मंगा जय भीम साथियों” (English translation: You will pay a heavy price for messing with Bhim Army.)

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, it was found to be false.

With the help of a relevant keyword search on Google, we found a video uploaded by ONA Khabar, dated January 14, with a title: “Protest over the man’s death at Bhadrak.”

Similar visuals were also found in a report by Kanak News. As per the report, the incident is from Bhadrak in Odisha, where locals had attacked and torched a police vehicle over an alleged suspect’s death after his body was found floating in a village pond.

A comparison between the keyframes of the viral video and news report reveals that they show the same incident.

Sambad English also reported the incident, stating that Bapi Mahalik of Hatuari village was detained by police for questioning in connection with the case. However, his body was later found floating in a village pond.

The report further adds: ‘Irate locals torched a police vehicle in their locality. They also blocked Bhadrak-Chandbali road at Alinagar by placing the body on road.’

NewsMobile had debunked the same video in May 2021, when it was linked to post-poll violence in West Bengal.

Therefore, we can conclude that an old video from Bhadrak in Odisha has been shared with a false claim.
