A controversy erupted after Bihar’s Information Technology Minister Mohammad Israil Mansuri visited the Vishnupad temple in Gaya. A petition was filed in a court in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur against Mansuri for “hurting religious sentiment of Hindus”.
In the above context, an image of BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain is widely shared on social media performing puja rituals in a Hindu temple. The caption claims that since Shahnawaz is a BJP leader, no one has objected to his temple visit.
The post is shared with a caption: “दामाद जी मुस्लिम हो तो मंदिर अपवित्र नहीं होता है.” (English translation: “Son-in-law is Muslim, so no temple gets impure.”)

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image uploaded by Shahnawaz Hussain on his Facebook page, dated October 3, 2017. The image was shared with a caption: “आज मैं आरा के चंदवा महायज्ञ में श्री रामानुजाचार्य जी की 1000वीं जयंती के अवसर पर आयोजित विश्व धर्म सम्मेलन में शामिल हुआ !यज्ञ में विश्वविख्यात संत श्री जियर स्वामी जी महाराज से आशीर्वाद लिया एवं उपस्थित श्रद्धालुओं को सम्बोधित किया !” (English translation: Today, I attended the World Religion Conference organised on the occasion of the 1,000th birth anniversary of Shri Ramanujacharya Ji at Chandva Mahayagya of Arrah! In the yagya, I took blessings from world-famous Saint Shri Jiya Swami Ji Maharaj and addressed the devotees!)
A hyperlocal news channel, ATN City News, also uploaded a video of Shahnawaz Hussain attending the World Religion Conference on October 4, 2017. The video was uploaded with a title: “03 अक्टूबर 17 चंदवा महायज्ञ में भाजपा के राष्ट्रीय प्रवक्ता शहनवाज हुसैन पहुचे” (English translation: 03 October, 17, BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain reached Chandwa Mahayagya”)
According to NavBharat Times, World Religion Conference was held at Bhojpur’s Chandwa between September 5, 2017, to October 5, 2017.
Thus, we can ascertain that the viral image is of Shahnawaz Hussain attending World Religion Conference and not visiting a temple.
