Fact Check: Oxford University Scholarship Named After Manmohan Singh? Here’s The Truth

Date:

Recently, a post surfaced on the Internet, claiming that Oxford University has started a scholarship under the name of former Indian prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.

The caption of the post reads: 800-year-old Oxford University started scholarship on the name of Manmohan Singh. Proud moment for India.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the post, it was found to be misleading.

Scanning through the Oxford University website, we found a list of all the scholarships offered by the university. However, we could not find any scholarship under his name.

On searching further, we found several media reports about a scholarship that is being offered in the name of Manmohan Singh by University of Cambridge.

According to the information available on the Cambridge Trust, the Manmohan Singh scholarship scheme was established in 2009 in honour of India’s Prime Minister, who graduated from University of Cambridge with a First in Economics in the late ’50s, and who was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the university in 2006.

According to the website of Saint John’s College, University of Cambridge, this scholarship will enable academically outstanding Indian students to study for PhD and MPhil degrees in subjects like Science and Technology, Economics and Social Sciences. The scholarships are fully funded and include academic fees, international airfare, a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and a UK Visa.

Thus, it is clear that the post is just misleading, because Oxford doesn’t offer any scholarship named after Dr Manmohan Singh.
