Fact Check: Edited Video of Tejasvi Surya’s Speech in Chhattisgarh Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

The youth wing of BJP BJYM gheraoed the residence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhagel, on August 24 2022, to protest against the issue of rising unemployment in the state. The party launched the ‘Halla Bol’ movement against the Congress government and claimed that over one lakh workers joined them in the biggest street protest in the history of the state. The BJP MP and national president of BJYM, Tejasvi Surya, too, participated in the protest and addressed the crowd on the inefficiency of the Bhagel government.

Against this backdrop, a viral video, showing people started chanting ‘Bhupesh Bhagel Zindabad’ as soon as Surya took his name in his speech, is doing the rounds on social media. The viral video claims that the people of Chhattisgarh love Bhagel no matter what.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: ये छत्तीसगढ़ है भाईसाहब भूपेश बघेल जी दिलों और दलों दोनों पर राज करते हैं (English translation: This is Chhattisgarh brother Bhupesh Baghel ji rules both hearts and parties.)

You can find the video here.

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact-checked the video, and found it to be misleading.

The audio clip in the viral video sounded distorted. So, running a Google Keyword Search about Tejasvi Surya’s visit and speech in Chhattisgarh, we found a live-stream video, dated August 24, 2022, on his official YouTube channel, with a title: ‘Halla Bol! BJYM protest over unemployment and corruption in education under Chhattisgarh Congress…

We could not find any instance in the entire video where the crowd chanted ‘Bhupesh Bhagel Zindabad’.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, we found a 5-minute video tweeted by the official handle of BJYM, dated August 24, 2022.

The video is a short clip of the same speech given by Surya in the YouTube live video, but from the front angle. Looking closely, we could see that the keyframes around 2:06 in the tweeted video match exactly with the viral video along with his attire.

Contrary to what is being viral now, Surya in his speech said that “Bhupesh Baghel is Sonia Gandhi’s collection master.” The viral clip seems like an edited version just after he said Bhupesh Bhagel, thereby misleading the audience.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming that the crowd chanted ‘Bhupesh Bhagel Zindabad’ during Tejasvi Surya’s speech in Chhattisgarh, is misleading.
