Fact Check: Dawn Did NOT Say That Flash Floods in Pak Due to People Not Reading Quran

Date:

At least 1,136 people have died in Pakistan since June, because of the devastating flash floods that have wreaked havoc across the country. Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said that around a third of Pakistan is under water as a result of flooding caused by record monsoon rains.

Amidst this, a screenshot of a report by Pakistani daily Dawn is being shared on social media. The story claims that Pakistan is facing floods because of people not reading the Quran.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be edited.

In the screenshot, we could see the date of the article and its authors. Taking a cue from this, we ran a search and found the original article that was published by Dawn. The headline in the original report reads: “Army called in as KP faces flood threat”

According to the original report, government decided to deploy army in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to help the civilian authorities in rescue operations. Also, another report by Dawn has clarified that the viral screenshot is fake.

Dawn mentioned that the font of the false headline is different from the usual format and that the doctored screenshot’s headline does not adhere to the Dawn style guide. Such as:

  • The fake headline ends with a full stop
  • Use of uppercase Cs for the words climate and change

Hence, it is clear that the viral screenshot is fake.
